Max Ernst, actually Maximilian Maria Ernst, [1891-1976], was a painter, graphic artist, and sculptor. He was a co-founder of the Cologne Dada group, and joined the Surrealist circle around André Breton in Paris. In 1921, the French poet Paul Éluard and his Russian wife Gaya travelled to Cologne where they met the artist Max Ernst, one of the pioneers of the city?s flourishing Dada movement. This encounter marked the start of a tumultuous ménage à trois. The "Repétitions," in which Max Ernst first published some of his collages in book form, appeared in 1922, the year Max Ernst moved to Paris, where he lived with the Éluards for two years. Répétitions (Repetitions), was a more conventional collaboration in so far as Éluard first wrote the poems and then selected a number of preexisting works by Ernst to accompany them.
