A propos de cet article

Newton?s contributions to Philosophical Transactions, made when it was still in its infancy, are largely devoted to one of his most significant scientific discoveries; the realisation that light can be refracted through a prism. Though he contemplated bringing these articles together as a single monograph, he never did so. Hence the series constitutes his principle statements on light in their first editions. In turn, Newton?s close connection with the Royal Society is well-known, he was elected a fellow in 1672, and was its president from 1703 to 1727. It is usual that the early issues of Philosophical Transactions were bound up in different ways. Here, volumes V-XII are bound in four in contemporary or near contemporary vellum, spines darkened, a little worn, spines skilfully repaired by Shepherds, edges speckled red, labels chipped. They have the bookplate of N Vansittart to the front pastedowns, of Winnards Bequest Free Public Library Wigan to the flyleaf, and very unobtrusive blind stamps to first and last leaves. Occasional foxing, but overall a clean and tidy set. Further photos provided upon request with pleasure. Vansittart (1766-1851) was a successful politician, who became Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1823, when he struggled with the national debt. He was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1822. Winnard was apparently a successful doctor, a typical Victorian benefactor, in that he hoped that the money that he left the good citizens of Wigan in his will to buy books for their new free library would lead to the possibility of betterment through self-learning. The blind stamps (which are unobtrusive, and only to the first and last leaves) read Wigan Free Public Library. It appears that the collection put together using Winnard?s bequest was dispersed by the Council some twenty years ago, since when they have been appearing on the market occasionally. A good part of it was bought at the time by a local man, and this set has come on to the market from his widow. In effect, then, this is the first time that these volumes have been sold in recent times. Early volumes of Philosophical Transactions are surprisingly rare both because the early issues were unpredictable in their printing and also because most of the individual issues were sent to the Fellows of the Royal Society who had to have them bound up. We have been able to locate only one complete series of the Newton articles, sold in Christies in 2025 for $75,600, or approximately £55,000 sterling. An uncommon set of Newton's complete works on light in Phil Trans, including his account of the discovery of the spectrum. Detailed collation available upon request. In sum, the Newton contributions are complete. The volumes as a whole are also complete with all prelims, plates and so on, other than one index leaf lacking at the end of volume 7.…
