358 pages. Frontispiece portrait from photograph of Senator Stewart. Red cloth. Gilt cover and spine titling. T.E.G. 6" x 9". An early participant in the California Gold Rush, Stewart was stricken with "Panama Fever" and was taken by teamsters to a fresh water spring at the top of Roger Williams Ravine in Nevada (now, Nevada City), just a short distance from where I write this listing. He recovered and became a miner in the rough and tumble world of pre-statehood California. In 1852, he left mining for the law, and in 1864, became a U. S. Senator from the state of Nevada. Stewart was the author of important mining laws, and became known as the "Silver Senator". Kurutz 604; Wheat, Books 198; Cowan II p. 616. A Near Fine copy (sunned spine) now in a custom clear mylar jacket. N° de réf. du vendeur 2795
