A propos de cet article

LOCATING THE GUNS THEY COULD NOT SEE. A firsthand unit history of the American engineers who brought flash and sound ranging to the Western Front, using observation, surveying, acoustics, and newly developed instruments to locate enemy artillery. SCIENCE GOES TO THE FRONT. Written by Sergeant Jesse R. Hinman shortly after the Armistice, and records the wartime service of the Second Battalion, 29th Engineers, one of the specialized American units responsible for 'flash and sound' ranging during World War I. The techniques allowed artillery positions to be located through visual observation of muzzle flashes and measurement of the sound produced by firing. FROM TRAINING TO COMBAT. Hinman follows the battalion from its training and organization through operations at Seicheprey, Xivray, Château-Thierry, St. Mihiel, Lorraine, and the Argonne, concluding with the end of the war and return home. The account combines unit history with descriptions of the specialized ranging sections and their work close to the fighting. THE MEN BEHIND THE TECHNOLOGY. The volume concludes with additional material including Bards of the Flash and Sound, To France With Pershing, and a substantial battalion roster, extending the book's usefulness beyond its narrative history to researchers tracing individual members of the unit. PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS: AN ILLUSTRATED UNIT HISTORY. Original blue cloth-covered boards with yellow lettering and flash-and-sound device stamped on the front board, yellow lettering to the spine. Octavo, approximately 8 inches tall, 272 pages. Illustrated throughout with historical black-and-white photographs, including portraits, battlefield views, towns and ruins, personnel, equipment, and scenes associated with the battalion's service in France. The text comprises fourteen chapters followed by an appendix containing Bards of the Flash and Sound, To France With Pershing, and a battalion roster. The roster records personnel of the organization and adds genealogical and military research value to the volume. CONDITION: Very Good. Bindings tight and square. Text clean with light, even age-toning. Moderate shelf-handling wear to the blue cloth, with rubbing at the corners and spine ends and modest sun-fading to the spine. Yellow cover and spine lettering remains readily legible. Previous owner's name and a brief handwritten content note appear on the front endpages. No dust jacket present. First Edition, First Printing. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: FINDING ARTILLERY BY FLASH AND SOUND. Flash and sound ranging represented an important development in World War I counter-battery warfare. Rather than depending solely upon aerial observation or direct sight of an enemy battery, specialized teams could determine artillery positions by triangulating observed muzzle flashes or measuring differences in the arrival time of the sound produced by a gun. The American Expeditionary Forces adopted techniques developed principally by British and French specialists. The 29th Engineers became the American organization responsible for putting this specialized work into operation in France. Modern histories of battlefield acoustics continue to cite Hinman's account as a primary source for American flash-and-sound-ranging operations during the war. THE SCIENTISTS BEHIND THE SOLDIERS. The volume is dedicated to Major Theodore Lyman, commander of the Second Battalion and later the First Battalion, 74th Engineers. Lyman, a Harvard physicist, was among the American scientific personnel involved in establishing flash- and sound-ranging training and operations in France. Hinman's narrative consequently occupies an interesting intersection between conventional regimental history and the history of military science: it records not simply where a unit fought, but how scientific observation, acoustics, surveying, communications, and mathematics were being adapted to the demands of modern artillery warfare. A RECORD OF THE MEN. The concluding battalion roster gives.…
