A propos de cet article

An unusual example of this important work in its original state. Hirsch, was inspired by the travelogue A. Wrede and Heinrich Maltzan. Leo Hirsch was the first European to reach Shibam and Tarim in the Wadi Hadramaut. This work was written three years after the completion of the journey. Hirsh began planing to travel to Hadhramaut in 1888 with a voyage to Aden, but he encountered many problems and left Aden to Somalia. But his journey to Aden opened for him the possibility to try again by keeping correspondence with a Yemeni of the Makkawi family. In December 1892, Hirsch landed again in Aden, after receiving help from an officer in the East India company, who had travelled several times between Hadramaut and India, and who provided him with maps of the region. He finally succeeded on the first of July 1893 to reach Mukallah, as he was following the route taken previously by Wrede. Hirsch travelled to the city of Hora, and from there he set out into Hadhramaut. He was the first scientist to step into Wadi Hadhramaut, which he reached via the towns of Shibam, Siyun, and Tarim. Hirsch provides not only new insights into the cities and towns of the coast and the Wadi, but also gives a lively scientific description of his route, as well as rich information which added many basic facts to the physical and geographical knowledge of Hadhramaut. He describes in details the topography of the Hadramaut region, its tribes, irrigation, Sultans, and the different plants. Bibliographical References: Henze II, 588; Hilprecht p.724. #9980.
