A propos de cet article

Description :

A lovely first edition of these translations of Richard Wagner's correspondence with Mathilde Wesendonck, a poet who he became notably infatuated with. A very scarce true first edition of these translations (also published in US in the same year). In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding. With a frontispiece and seven plates (four of which are facsimiles). Collated, complete. This volume offers the striking letters sent from German composer Richard Wagner to poet and author, Mathilde Wesendonck. Famously, the composer was infatuated with her, using the words of five of her verses as the basis of Wesendonck Lieder. His wife Minnablamed Mathilde for the break-up of their marriage.Translated by English doctor and theosophist William Ashton Ellis, who is best remembered for his definitive translations of Wagner's prose works. In the original decorative cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with minor shelf wear and a couple marks to the boards. Bookplate of one William Agnew to the front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with occasional spots, heaviest scatterings to the first and last few leaves. Contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper. Very Good Indeed. N° de réf. du vendeur 956Y22
