Three volumes bound in one. (1) Richmondshire, Its Ancient Lords and Edifices: A Concise Guide to the Localities of Interest to the Tourist and Antiquary; With Short Notices of Memorable Men: Published by George Bell. [1852] First edition. xiv, 159pp. Lacks frontispiece and title page. Ten engraved plate illustrations, with subjects such as Richmond Castle, St Martin's Abbey, Ruins of Easby Abbey, Bedale Church. (See Boyne, p184.) (2) Wanderings in Wensleydale, Yorkshire: Printed by John Bell, 1864. 71pp, plus eight engraved plate illustrations with subjects including Bolton Castle, Middleham Castle, Jervaux Abbey, Aysgarth Forth, etc and fold out sketch map of Wensleydale area, showing the proposed railway line, at rear. Signed and inscribed by the author to 'Mr Grainger of Harrogate' on the frontispiece. There is also a note in a copperplate hand recording a death on "16th March 1868, very suddenly in one of the public baths at Sunderland" but it is not clear whether this relates to Hardcastle or Grainger. (Not in Boyne.) (3) A Guide to Richmond and the Neighbourhood, Including Wensleydale and Rokeby, With a Map of the District, Plans of the Abbeys of St Agatha and Jerveaux, and a Complete and Accurate List of the Rare Plants of Teesdale: Published by T & A Bowman. iv, 88pp, with a fold out map of the district around Richmond, a fold-out ground plan of Easby Abbey, and one plate illustration. The 1843 edition, which does not include the Wensleydale material present in this edition, was dismissed by Boyne as a 'mere trashy guide book' (see Boyne, p184). The plan of Richmondshire is cracked and creased with a small portion absent. Generally throughout all three volumes is some mild page tanning and occasional spotting, else internally neat and clean. There is a previous owner's bookplate on the front paste down endpaper, as well as a small bookseller's ticket (Henry Walker, Bookseller, Leeds). Bound in half leather over blue marbled boards with red leather spine label and gilt lettering. The boards are worn and scuffed at edges and leather sunned on spine and worn at joints, corners rounded and peeling.
