A propos de cet article

The First Edition of William Saroyan's "Rock Wagram" is one of the most personal novels he ever wrote, published by Doubleday in 1951 at what may have been the most chaotic year of his life. "First Edition" is stated on the copyright page. Saroyan won the Pulitzer Prize for The Time of Your Life, declined it on principle, wrote The Human Comedy, won an Academy Award, and then spent the rest of his career writing novels that were really just his own life with the names changed. Rock Wagram is the first of what critics call his "fatherhood novels," a loosely disguised account of his own fractured marriage and desperate need to be a husband and father. The novel follows Arak Vagramian, who is a bartender at Fat Aram's in Fresno, who becomes Rock Wagram, a casual Hollywood star. Fame arrives easily; everything else does not. Rock wants love, family, permanence. He gets none of it. It's a novel about the bewilderment of loving someone and losing them anyway. The real-life version: Saroyan published this book in 1951, the same year he remarried his ex-wife, Carol Marcus. By October, she filed for divorce again. The novel knows this is coming before he does. The back flap of this copy carries early critical praise from Bennett Cerf, Christopher Morley, and Clifton Fadiman — a time capsule of how seriously Saroyan was taken at his peak. The book is in Good+ condition. Its muted sage-green cloth boards, clean and tight, with red title lettering on the spine, Saroyan's facsimile signature embossed on the front board, beautiful deep rose/salmon endpapers, bright and unmarked, binding solid, pages with age toning to the edges, text clean. Dust jacket Good, with striking red, gold, and green illustrated design vivid and present, original $3.50 price intact and unclipped, significant chipping and loss at DJ spine crown, general wear and surface scuffing to panels, rear panel with some creasing, protected in Gaylord mylar cover. Note: photos are being retaken for the final listing. An honest copy of a searingly personal novel from one of the great American originals.…

Description de la boutique

You're building something specific. Not just a shelf of books: a library with atmosphere. The kind of room that feels like it has a history before you walked into it. The problem is finding the real thing. The vintage market is full of book club editions dressed up as first printings, reprints with no dust jackets, and sellers who grade "Good" when they mean "survived a flood." It's time-consuming, confusing, and easy to overpay. That's where I come in. I'm Rob. I worked in the archive stacks at UW's Suzzallo Library. Gothic reading rooms, stained glass, the kind of place where books feel like they matter. I've been authenticating and grading vintage editions ever since. Now I spend weekends hunting first editions at estate sales across Northern California: literary horror, classic sci-fi, and Gothic fiction from the 1960s–1980s. The books that actually built the Dark Academia aesthetic, not the modern reprints cashing in on it. Every book in my shop has been verified for edition and graded honestly. Sometimes brutally. You'll know exactly what you're getting before it ships. Your order arrives wrapped in tissue paper with a wax seal sticker. Because the details matter, and you're not buying shelf filler. If you're building a library that looks like it belongs in a Victorian study instead of a big-box store, you're in the right place. Browse the collection.…
