A propos de cet article

FIRST EDITION. Publishers green cloth, Large Octavo, xxiv, 517 pp. plus ads., With 16 full-page color illustrations, seven full-page black-and white drawings and over 60 in-text illustrations. Features sixteen color plates in brilliant, subdued hues and seven in black & white by Arthur Rackham. Each color plate features fine tissue guard with red captions. Additional partial-page imagery, headers, tailpieces, symbology and decoration throughout. Some light shelf-wear at the tips, the very scarce Unclipped ($2.50 on the spine) dust wrapper has a chip at the top of the spine and is moderately foxed on the spine and has a few assorted minor tears. Overall, the wrapper would rate somewhere between good and very good. Sir Thomas Malory (1405 – 1471) collected all the ancient tales of the mythical Arthur and published them under the title Le Morte D’Arthur. The characters are familiar: Lancelot and Guinevere, and Tristan and Isolde, here in the definitive account of the Arthurian legends. The vigorous, eloquent epic tale of valor is noted for having been written in the best English prose of the Fifteenth Century. Rackham received his commission for this superbly illustrated edition of Malory's masterpiece (first published by Caxton in 1485) while World War I still raged—a fact that perhaps explains his illustrations' generally dark view of the Matter of Britain. From Arthur's first unsheathing of Excalibur in the midst of fierce battle beneath overcast skies, to his tragic clash with his traitorous son on the dark fields of Camlann, Rackham confronts readers with combat, conflict and death. Despite (or perhaps even because of) this grim realism within a fantastic context, "Rackham's work became balm for wounded soldiers, as one mother wrote: ' .When [my son] was getting better from very bad wounds. your illustrations of Books were his great joy and delight' (Hamilton, 112). …
