A propos de cet article

First edition, from the library of one of the author's successors in the field, of this extensively illustrated publication chronicling Stein's second expedition to Central Asia, undertaken between 1906 and 1908. This copy belonged to David Talbot Rice (1903-1972). "Although best-known as a Byzantine scholar, Talbot Rice also pioneered the post-war study of Islamic art in Britain" (ODNB). His bookplate is on the front pastedowns. Howgego IV S65; Yakushi S331. 2 vols, octavo. Tissue-guarded frontispieces (Vol. I in colour), many plates (7 colour), 6 folding panoramas, 3 folding colour maps; each vol. with single leaf of publishers adverts at end. Publisher's remainder binding of brown cloth, spines lettered in gilt, top edges brown. Light rubbing, top edge of vol. I faded, contents generally clean and fresh, the occasional leaves unopened: very good indeed. …
