Item description from seller

TWO TITLES BOUND TOGETHER in the ONE BOOK, dated 1721 (Rule of Faith) + 1720 (Postscript) respectively. Each with their own title page. Author listed as "Edward Hawarden" in ink notation on title page & on bookdealer's printed catalog slip tipped-in to rear pastedown (see below), though author not stated in book. Edward Hawarden (aka Harden; 1662-1735) was an English Roman Catholic theologian & controversialist. No publisher, no place, no printer, but likely published by Thomas Meighan with 2-page catalog of Thomas Meighan, Drury Lane, London, bound into rear. Small volume. Bound in full leather (calf), raised bands, gilt-lettered black leather label to re-backed spine, gilt-ruled spine. Full pagination as follows: ffep, "Rule of Faith" half-title page, title page, preface (4pp), p.1-65 (with errata slip at end), "Postscript" title page, p.3-74, second part of "Rule of Faith" half-title & title pages, preface (24pp), p.75-266, third part of "Rule of Faith" p.267-344, contents (6pp: - xxv-xxx), catalogue of books sold by Thomas Meighan (2pp), blank leaf, rear endpaper. Previous bookseller's printed catalog slip tipped-in to rear pastedown, as follows: "[Hawarden, Edward] - The Rule of Faith Truly Stated in a New & Easy Method - First edn., 1721 [No place or printer, but catalogue of Thomas Meighan, London]. 12mo, contemp. calf, neatly rebacked. 12.50 pounds. As a Roman Catholic, Hawarden was intended by James II to be tutor of divinity at Magdalen, but was forced by the revolution to leave". Thomas Meighan is "sometimes referred to as the father of Catholic booksellers in 18th century London, back when it was still hazardous to publish or even sell Catholic books in England, therefore most Catholic works appeared anonymously". With ex-library ink stamp to ffep: "Hawkesyard Priory" (located in the UK). "Built by the Dominican Order in 1896, the Priory is a former monastery of the Dominican Friars. The Library at Hawkesyard Priory was built in 1901-1902 & formed part of the Church & College buildings. In later years ownership of the site changed & the College buildings became Hawkesyard Priory Nursing Home. The Library was demolished around 2008 & the area redeveloped to make additional rooms in the Nursing Home." Slight handling wear, mild toning & foxing, otherwise a very nice clean tight solid leatherbound copy. 65pp (Rule of Faith) + 344pp (Postscript). RARE.
