Item description from seller

A first impression of the first UK paperback edition, being the second Pan paperback issued in 1946. Pan published three small hardback books in 1945-46, and three un-numbered paperbacks over the same period. These all preceded the main Pan Books numbered series which commenced in 1947. All of these early Pan books are quite scarce. In addition, the books all featured variations of the Pan illustration designed by artist and author Mervyn Peake, making them even more collectable. With a five-page Introduction by Edmund Blunden. ***A good copy in stiff grey pictorial wrappers, printed in orange and black. Covers have some marks and creasing commensurate with age and handling [see scans]. The fragile spine is rubbed and faded, with a light reading crease, but is complete and without tears. Internally the pages have some light corner creasing, and there is some foxing on the edges of the page block, and some internal foxing also. No ownership inscriptions. ***123 pages. 180mm x 120mm. ***'PAN Books was registered as a limited company on the 1st of September 1944, jointly owned by Alan Bott and The Book Society, which he founded in 1929. In 1945 they published their very first paperback book - a collection called "Tales of the Supernatural". This was followed in July 1946 by Laurence Sterne's "A Sentimental Journey" and Robert Louis Stevenson's "The Suicide Club". At the same time, PAN also published four hardback books: Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" in December 1945, followed by George and Weedon Grossmith's "Diary of a Nobody" and "Scenes of London Life" in December 1946. In 1949 they published "The Fountain of Life" by A G Prys-Jones'. [From 'A Brief History of PAN Books Ltd. '] ***First impression of the first UK paperback edition, published just after the war in 1946. Of interest to collectors of Pan paperbacks and also of the art work of Mervyn Peake. A reasonable copy of a fragile book that is now 75 years old. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
