Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii [1-3] 4-311 [312: printer's imprint], three-quarter brown leather and marbled boards, spine panel lettered and tooled in gold, top edge stained red, slate coated endpapers. First collected edition, first printing. This Hurst and Blackett edition collects three fantasy novellas, "The Seventh Dream," "The Doctor's Secret" and "The Turkish Baths." "The Seventh Dream" was first published as a book by F. V. White & Co. in 1888. A man is hypnotized and sent into a dream world. The dreams "describe a city of the future inhabited by people who only speak the truth. Perfect health. Simple lives." - Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, Additions. "The Doctor's Secret" and "The Mystery of a Turkish Bath" were first published as separate books in 1890 and 1888 respectively by F. V. White & Co. Mrs. Humphreys's considerable output of romantic fiction mainly targeted female library subscribers. In his foreword to Her RECOLLECTIONS OF A LITERARY LIFE (1936) Philip Gibbs described Humphreys as "a born storyteller." In later life she became a keen follower of Madame Blavatsky (1831-1891) and ardently devoted to the tenets of Theosophy. See Locke, A Spectrum of Fantasy Volume II, p. 95. A very good copy.
