A propos de cet article

First edition. Original boards, 16vo, 82 pages. 16 cm. In Hebrew. Title translates as "From the Wrath of the Oppressor." Early literary work of S.Y. Agnon published in Germany. "S.Y. Agnon was an Israeli writer who was one of the leading modern Hebrew novelists and short-story writers. In 1966 he was the co-recipient, with Nelly Sachs, of the Nobel Prize for Literature. "Shmuel Yosef Agnon, a prominent figure in Hebrew literature and co-recipient of the 1966 Nobel Prize in Literature, is widely recognized as the leading modern writer in the Hebrew language. Born on July 17, 1888, in Buczacz, Galicia, he was raised in a family with a rich scholarly Orthodox background, which profoundly influenced his early education in Jewish folklore and religious texts. Emigrating to Palestine in 1907, Agnon engaged with Zionist ideals, while his writing increasingly reflected the contrasts between the nostalgia of the Eastern European shtetl and the complexities of life in modern Palestine. His literary career evolved during a lengthy stay in Germany from 1913 to 1924, where he was exposed to contemporary European literature and developed lasting connections with notable Jewish intellectuals. Agnon's works often explore themes of cultural dislocation and spiritual tension, particularly through stories that merge humor and melancholy, such as his celebrated novel The Bridal Canopy, which draws parallels to Cervantes' Don Quixote. His later works, including A Guest for the Night, reflect a deep sense of loss and alienation in the wake of the Holocaust and the destruction of shtetl culture. Agnon's narratives resonate universally, offering insights into the transitions from traditional to modern societies, making his contributions significant not only to Jewish literature but to world literature as a whole." (Branam, Harold; EBSCO) SUBJECT(S): Hebrew fiction. Fictional Work. OCLC: 21853330. Ex-library with minimal marks, lacks backstrip, otherwise Very Good Condition (GER-61-1-D-ggemlx).…
