- Octavo, navy blue cloth titled in gilt on the front cover & spine. The binding is lightly rubbed & bumped with some dampstaining to the front edge of the rear cover. The gilt titling on the spine is a bit faded & the tail of the spine is slightly chipped. 42 pages with 4 addendum slips dated 1925 laid in. Illustrated with 11 black-and-white plates, including a frontispiece. There is light staining & foxing to the pastedowns, endpapers & flyleaf. 1 of the addendum slips is foxed. The front edges of the leaves are slightly rippled from dampstaining. Good. First edition. An addendum to the preface dated 1925 states that the author originally collected the material in this book for an address he had been asked to deliver at the formal opening of the new Assay Office: "Owing to the great loss of life due to the explosion of a bomb in September, 1920, and the consequent delay in the completion of the building under another superintendent the new edifice was opened without ceremony." The author was subsequently encouraged to make the material available in this book.
