Item description from seller

Large folio; xvi, 279 pages; Contents clean and secure in original publisher's green cloth binding with gilt lettering at spine and front board in original dustjacket with edgewear and missing one inch strip at top of spine and upper right corner of front panel (3 x 3 x 5). The Chinese personal seal of Mrs. Moore reproduced on the title-page in red. Separately issued 10 page printed Supplement laid-in, which covers the painting "Distinguished Scholars Feast Before Parting" by Shen Chou (1427-1509) - a painting added to the Collection too late to be included in the first edition of the book. Letterpress printed in Great Britain at the University Press in Oxford by John Johnson, Printer to the University. Plates printed in the United States of America by Arthur Jaffe, New York. Paper made in the United States of America by the Worthy Paper Company Associates West Springfield, Massachusetts." The catalogue treats 72 paintings from pre-T'ang times into the Ch'ing dynasty. The volume begins with an Introduction and a general description of the collection. These are followed by a description of each painting and the translation of its seals and inscriptions. Fifty-one are described in full with translations of all inscriptions, together with readings and identification of all seals. The inscriptions and seals are addressed by Dr. Lin Yutang. The remaining are described more briefly in a supplement. There are 52 reproductions of paintings, of which five are in colour. There are also five plates of calligraphy and three plates containing 115 seals. There is also a section of brief, but useful biographical notes Chinese characters are dealt with in an Index to Chinese Names, Words, Terms, and Seals written by Mr. Hsuge K. Pao. In several instances the scroll paintings are reproduced in their entirety, on long sheets folded to conform with the book’s format, which is very large. The final section is devoted entirely to seals (reproduced) and to biographical notes, a bibliography and an index to Chinese names, words, terms and seals. [NYT, 1942]. Very large, heavy volume, additional shipping.
