1st Printing. 865 pages. Published in 2017. Retrospective collection of the author's greatest essays. The First Slipcased Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a Slipcased Edition for distribution to libraries and LOA subscribers only. None of the copies was sold to the public. The Slipcased Edition has the same ISBN as the regular trade edition. An austerely elegant production: Regular-sized volume format. Text by Susan Sontag edited and annotated by David Rieff. Cream hard board slipcase. Printed to the highest standards on acid-free paper, utilizing sewn binding, closely woven rayon cloth boards, satin bound-in ribbon marker, and a page layout that is both readable and elegant. The book is guaranteed to last for several generations of readers and collectors (despite frequent and regular use, the estimated life span of Library of America Editions is 1000 years; un-used, they will last forever). Without DJ, as issued. Collects, in their definitive form, Susan Sontag's "Later Essays". Which include "Under The Sign of Saturn", "AIDS And Its Metaphors", "Where The Stress Falls", "Regarding The Pain of Others", and "At The Same Time". "An unprecedented collection of the controversial later writings of the greatest and most provocative critic of our time" (Library of America). By any measure, Susan Sontag had a difficult life, marred by abusive relationships - inflicted by her to her son, lovers, and closest friends, then reciprocated by her husband and her subsequent lovers to her - as well as three bouts with cancer, among other life-threatening crises. It seems miraculous that she was able to write these essays, tenaciously, at all, and as no other American writer has before or after her. Her exact contemporary, Cormac McCarthy, arguably the greatest novelist of our time, is incapable of writing a decent essay. If we recognize and realize that the essay is a literary genre on the same level as the novel, then we should appreciate Sontag's achievement as being of the same significance as McCarthy. An absolute "must-have" title for Susan Sontag collectors. This title is a great collection. This is one of very few copies of the First Library of America Slipcased Edition/First Printing still available online, is still in the publisher's original shrinkwrap, and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. Please note: The First Slipcased Edition was distributed to libraries and LOA subscribers only. ALL other copies available online are the regular trade edition. A rare copy thus. Winner of the MacArthur Genius Grant, the National Book Critics Circle Award in 1977 for "On Photography", the National Book Award in 2000 for "In America", and the Jerusalem Prize in 2001. Shimon Peres, in awarding the Jerusalem Prize, described Sontag as "one of the world's finest writers and greatest minds". One of the most influential and important writer-intellectuals of the 20th century. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO OTHER SUSAN SONTAG TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 1598535196.…

Susan Sontag was the most influential critic of her time. This second volume in Library of America's definitive Sontag edition gathers all the collected essays and speeches from her last quarter-century, brilliant works whose subjects, from the AIDS epidemic, 9/11, the Iraq war, and the perverse allure of Fascism to painting, dance, music, film, and scintillating literary portraits of such writers as Walter Benjamin, Roland Barthes, Antonin Artaud, Machado de Assis, Jorge Luis Borges, Nadine Gordimer, Joseph Brodsky, W. G. Sebald, Marina Tsvetayeva, and Robert Walser, bear enduring witness to passionate curiosity and expansive intellect. She brings to every subject an unwavering focus and intensity, and a deep commitment to "extending our sense of what a human life can be," as she said on accepting the Jerusalem Prize in 2000. An account of her 1993 residence in war-torn Sarajevo to stage a production of Waiting for Godot becomes a meditation on the meaning of culture: "Culture, serious culture, is an expression of human dignity-which is what people in Sarajevo feel they have lost." AIDS and Its Metaphors marks a further development of the central ideas of her classic Illness as Metaphor, while Regarding the Pain of Others explores eloquently the troubling moral issues surrounding photographic depictions of violence, cruelty, and atrocity.
