Extremely rare, First Edition hardback, published in 1664. 12" by 7.5". Leather. An important work on Forestry. Sylva was first presented in 1662 as a paper to the Royal Society and then published in book form in 1664. It is recognised as one of the most influential texts on forestry to ever be published. In three parts, 'Sylva', 'Pomona' and 'Kalendarium Hortense'. Pomona and Kalendarium appear as appendices to Sylva. Leather boards very worn with cracking to spine with split at top. Binding firm. Bound in full speckled calf by Roger de Coverly, his printed name at top of first endpaper, gilt lettered label to spine between raised bands, marbled endpapers. Slight darkening to both covers near spine due to the leather grain, small hole to lower margin of errata leaf, not near text, 6 pages in the Cyder section have some pale spotting (see image), small neat repaired closed tear to inner margin of page 62, not affecting text, otherwise a very clean crisp tight copy.
