First edition of Evelyn's most celebrated book and a foundational precursor of late modern conservation literature. Evelyn's appeal for a national scheme of reforestation is also famously the first book to be printed by order of the Royal Society, which had been founded four years previously. During the 1640s and 1650s production of glass and iron increased rapidly, and the wood used to fire the furnaces and factories was not being replaced by fresh planting. This led to a serious shortage of wood from which the Navy could construct ships. Evelyn petitioned the king for a concerted campaign of reforestation and claimed in his preface that he had induced landowners to plant many millions of trees. Alexander Hunter, who edited five editions of Sylva in the 18th and early 19th centuries, wrote in his preface that "soon after the publication of the Sylva. the Spirit for Planting increased to a high degree; and there is reason to believe that many of our ships, [used] in the last war. were constructed from Oaks planted at that time". The appendix Pomona includes a collection of five contributions on the making of cider by other writers, Mr Beale, Sir Paul Neil, John Newburgh, Doctor Smith and Captain Taylor. This copy has extensive manuscript notes in the form of a shipping and prices log on the endpapers and initial and final integral leaves, dated September 1772 onwards; the shipping log appears to be for a merchant ship delivering rum. Present too are the ownership signature to the front free endpaper and stamps to the title page and dedication page of the Scottish writer and clergyman Aulay Macaulay (1758- 1819), brother of Colin and Zachary Macaulay, and uncle of the historian Thomas Babington Macaulay. Aulay published Essays on various Subjects of Taste and Criticism in 1780, and Two Discourses on Sovereign Power and Liberty of Conscience in 1781. The title page has the pencilled ownership signature of John S. Hicks (1842-1904) in New Island; a lumber merchant, Hicks took a great interest in forestry and was a supporter of the Agricultural Society of Queens and Nassau, a particularly appropriate provenance for this volume. ESTC R12326; Henrey 132; Keynes 40-52-57; Wing E-3508 & 3516. Linda Williams, "The Anthropocene and the long seventeenth century: 1550-1750", in Tom Bristow & Thomas H. Ford, eds., A Cultural History of Climate Change, 2016. Quarto (293 x 196 mm). With 2 woodcut illustrations in the text, woodcut historiated initials. Eighteenth-century brown quarter calf, red morocco label, marbled sides, extremities sympathetically restored with old marbled paper. Without terminal errata leaf. Light rubbing along joints, final text leaf with short closed tear at foot and 2 chips not affecting text, rear free endpaper excised, some soiling to contents with a few early marginalia of sums, light worming at foot of a few leaves, contents crisp. A very nice copy. N° de réf. du vendeur 142111
