It’s night. A young man enters the room where a young woman is asleep. He sits down on the floor next to the bed, and begins to tell a story to the baby in her womb...
Amsterdam: during the opening of her first major exhibition, on the day she hoped to break through as a young visual artist, Amira Nazari hears that the local television channel intends to expose her as a fraud and ruin her career. Also at the exhibition is Sebastian Vogelenzang, overworked from his job, and yearning for a more rewarding and meaningful life. Amira and Sebastian have not seen each other in years, but they immediately feel deeply attracted to each other.
Over the next few weeks Amira begins to confront some of the ghosts from her own past, and Sebastian begins to open up emotionally. In this he gets help from unexpected quarters: a wise elderly lady, who lives opposite the house where Anne Frank spent her years in hiding, and who shares with him her vision of how we can create a just and peaceful world, living inwardly fulfilling lives, in harmony with nature and with the earth itself.
Amira and Sebastian grow ever closer, as they learn more and more about themselves and about the world. But then a challenge presents itself which is totally unexpected and new.
