A propos de cet article

First edition of this discussion of an important phase in the opening of Japan to the West, describing growing Japanese resentment towards the crippling Shimonoseki Indemnity - the final instalment of which was paid in the year before publication - and arguing that the reparations were illegal and unfair. Large octavo. Original purple wrappers, gatherings sewn and glued into wrappers, covers lettered in black. Housed in custom green quarter morocco solander box. Front cover with contemporary ink inscription ("Hanford"), perhaps that of the American naval officer Admiral Franklin Hanford (1844-1928), who served on the Asiatic Station in the 1870s; couple of old pencil notations on wrappers. Light wear and browning to covers, scattered spotting internally: a near-fine example of a vulnerable publication. …
