A propos de cet article

First edition. 8vo; original red cloth, lettered in gilt on spine; no dustwrapper; pp. xiv + 190, incl. index. Cloth slightly rubbed and stippled; hand-stamp of the 'Non-European & Native Affairs Dept' of the City of Johannesburg to pastedowns; some light foxing to endpapers and outermost leaves. Good condition. 'For a member of the White group to be concerned about the impact of White domination on the non-European population of the Union, or for such a one to plead for fuller knowledge, or more humane consideration, of non-European needs and interests, is to earn for himself the title of "negrophilist," kafir-boetie, or - most scathing of all - "liberal." The White heretic on the subject of race relations is felt by many of his fellow-Whites to be a traitor to his own group.' - From the author's Preface. "Hoernlé . was not only an academic, but also a practical philosopher deeply concerned with the problems of his country; and, indeed, the political and social postures which he displayed in the course of his distinguished life were well in keeping with his synoptic vision. He was for many years chairman of the South African Institute of Race Relations. In the Phelp Stokes lectures, entitled 'South African Native policy and the liberal spirit' he examined the sources of conflict in our multi-racial society and the various forms which race relations, in the light of his liberal and synthetic outlook, could take . " - DSAB III, p. 398.…
