First Edition. 3 Volumes. Quarto. Lacking errata leaf, else complete. Bound in contemporary mottled calf, blue speckled edges, re-backed preserving most of original spines. Published by J. Davis, for B. & J. White, G. & G. Robinson, T. Payne [& 4 others in London], 1797. Provenance: This copy of Eden’s pioneering work of social investigation was owned by J. Paul Getty (1892-1976). Each volume contains the library stamps of Sutton Place from the time when it was owned by J. Paul Getty, at the time the world's wealthiest private individual. The library stamps read: "Getty Oil (Britain) Ltd., | Sutton Place, | Guildford, | Surrey." Following Getty's death, the Getty Oil Corporation sold Sutton Place to Stanley J. Seeger (1930-2011), who assembled a wonderful art and book collection during his lifetime. It seems likely that Seeger enjoyed the irony of a study of poverty from the library of the world's richest man. Each volume also contains the armorial bookplate of Edward Southwell Trafford (1838–1912), a landowner and judge. Some wear to the binding, very occasional light spotting and browning; a near fine example. Vol I: A previous owner’s ink correction to two words on p. 130 and p.283, a tiny hole to p. 265 affecting two letters without any loss of meaning. Vol II: A small tear to p. 157. Vol III: A small number of tiny corner creases. A tiny hole to p. cccliii affecting two letters without any loss of meaning. "The State of the Poor is one of the classical works in the history of economics. Eden was led to embark on the subject by the high prices brought on by the war in 1794 and 1795, and the effect they had on the living conditions of the poorer classes. Eden's own work, notwithstanding its originality, might now be forgotten if it were not for the invaluable collection of facts attached to it, which can never cease to be of importance. it has proved the basis of sociological investigation ever since." - PMM. "[The State of the Poor] was written from a perspective that reveals Eden's general adherence to Adam Smith's system of natural liberty in economic affairs; this led Karl Marx to claim that Eden was the only eighteenth-century disciple of Smith to produce a work of any significance."
