A propos de cet article

The boards have slight creasing to the spine and a few light surface marks only. Light browning to the page edges with a little dark marking to the bottom corners. The pages are clean and unmarked. No jacket as issued. First printing. The original owner was Professor Peter Gray who was the Master of Gonville & Caius College in Cambridge between 1988 and 1996 although there is nothing on the book to indicate this. Fisher had been a Fellow of Caius as well.

A propos de ce titre

Synopsis

This volume presents a selection of the letters of Ronald Aylmer Fisher, a pioneer in the methodology of twentieth century scientific research whose work on the principles of inductive inference greatly enlarged our understanding of the nature of uncertainty and contributed fundamentally to the philosophy of our age. The letters reflect Fisher's work in developing statistical methods needed in the interpretation of experimental data, and his later efforts, which recast the entire theoretical basis for mathematical statistics and experimental design. Relevant material from the letters of Fisher's distinguished correspondents is also included. This unique collection will shed light on one of the great legends in the history of science and statistics.

Présentation de l'éditeur

It is unlikely that anyone has had a greater impact on the methodology of scientific research in the twentieth century than Ronald Aylmer Fisher. From his early work in developing statistical methods needed for the interpretation of experimental data, he went on to recast the entire theoretical basis for mathematical statistics and to initiate the deliberate study and development of experimental design central to the whole process of the Natural Sciences. In clarifying the principles of inductive inference, Fisher greatly enlarged our understanding of the nature of uncertainty and contributed fundamentally to the philosophy of our age. This volume presents a selection from Fisher's letters on statistical inference and analysis and related topics. It also includes relevant material from the letters (from many distinguished scientists) to which he was replying. It is a companion volume to Natural selection, heredity, and eugenics: selected correspondence of R. A. Fisher with Leonard Darwin and others (ed. J. H. Bennett, Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1983).
