A propos de cet article

1893 and 1894. First editions thus. Volumes 3 and 4 of the six-volume 'Saga Library' edited by William Morris and Eirikr Magnusson, being volumes 1 & 2 of 'Heimskringla' (of 4 volumes). [vii], 410pp. and a folding map in a pocket at the end of the book; [v], 484pp. Top edges gilt. Heimskringla is a collection of sagas about Swedish and Norwegian kings, beginning with the saga of the legendary Swedish-Norwegian dynasty of the Ynglings, followed by accounts of historical Norwegian rulers from Harald Fairhair of the 9th century up to the death of the pretender Eystein Meyla in 1177. The title Heimskringla comes from the first words of the first saga in the compilation (Ynglinga saga), Kringla heimsins, "the orb of the Earth". Eiríkr or Eiríkur Magnússon (1 February 1833 – 24 January 1913) was an Icelandic scholar at the University of Cambridge, who taught Old Norse to the English textile designer, poet and artist William Morris (1834-1896), and translated numerous Icelandic sagas into English in collaboration with him. Between 1891 and 1905 they published the Saga Library, which included Heimskringla and eventually extended to six volumes (the final volume of the Saga Library, volume 4 of the Heimskringla, is an index that is entirely Eiríkr's work, published in 1905 after Morris's death. For sale are the first two volumes of the Heimskringla, containing the first seven sagas (theYnglings, Halfdan the Black, Harald Hairfair, Hakon the Good, King Harald Greycloak and Earl Hakon the Son of Sigurd, King Olaf Tryggvison, and Olaf the Holy the son of Harald). There are also explanations of the metaphors in the verses. The two volumes are uniformly bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling and designs on the front boards and dark green leather spines with gold titling and designs. The cases of the books are in very good condition with some shelf wear to the boards and light bumping with some wear and a little loss of colour to the leather on the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with some foxing to the endpapers and first and last few pages, including some marks on the half-title and title pages. The front free endpaper in the first volume and both free endpapers in the second volume are heavily browned. There is no inscription.…
