A smart and informative illustrated first edition, with engaging ephemera. A smart first edition of this comprehensive and informative title. Bound in original green cloth, with striking gilt motif to the front board, and smart gilt lettering to the spine.Features a monochrome frontispiece, and frequent vignette illustrations, which compliment and inform the corresponding text. This copy features additional material in the form of a letter, corresponding newspaper extract, and 2 booklets reprinted from the North Western Naturalist. The booklets are entitled 'Implications of Ennerdale Relict Fauna', by H. Edward Forrest, and 'Herbert Edward Forrest (1858-1942)', by pioneering prehistoric archaeologist and independent scholar Lilly Chitty. Both booklets were published by T. Buncle & Co. Ltd, in Arbroath, in 1945 and 1943 respectively, and contain monochrome frontispieces. The additional letter is dated 1952, and is typed, thanking the correspondent for their information on hatchments, which are the subject of the news paper extract. The letter is signed by P. G. Summers, who was the co-founder of the Bath Heraldic Society. Bound in original green cloth. Externally, very smart. Very mild rubbing to extremities. Mild bumping to head and tail. Front hinge starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages generally bright and clean, with the odd spot. Mild spotting to text block edges.
