A propos de cet article

An important monograph documenting the contributions of Dr. Walter Merrill and Dr. Harvey Bender, cardiothoracic surgeons at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, in the surgical treatment of congenital heart disease. Stapled wraps, 8 7/8 x 6 inches, 55 pp., figures, references. Good (patch if paper erosion, front cover, corner of one page ruffled; address label, rear cover; see photos). Scarce. (K011) Dr. Walter Merrill and Dr. Harvey Bender made highly significant contributions to the surgery of congenital heart disease, operating as pioneering academic and clinical collaborators at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). Working closely together through the late 20th century, they transformed Vanderbilt into a premier, globally recognized hub for pediatric and congenital cardiac care. Dr. Harvey Bender's Key Contributions. Dr. Bender was a master cardiothoracic surgeon who arrived at Vanderbilt in 1971, eventually chairing the newly formed Department of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery. Pioneering Infancy Interventions: He was one of the earliest champions of performing corrective, rather than just palliative, surgery for congenital heart disease in newborns and infants. Clinical Advancement: He pioneered and advanced surgical treatments for complex defects such as Tetralogy of Fallot, transposition of the great arteries, and infant aortic stenosis. National Leadership: He shaped the field by chairing the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and serving as president of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Walter Merrill's Key Contributions. Dr. Merrill joined Vanderbilt's department in 1983, collaborating heavily with Dr. Bender on clinical work and research. The Senning Operation Milestone: Together with Dr. Bender, Dr. Merrill co-authored landmark clinical research on the Senning operation, a complex atrial switch procedure used to correct transposition of the great arteries in infants. Their decade-long outcome tracking helped establish baseline protocols for late survival and physiological results. Transplantation Pioneer: Encouraged directly by Dr. Bender, Dr. Merrill successfully performed Vanderbilt's very first heart transplant on April 25, 1985. This opened the door for Vanderbilt's expansive pediatric and adult congenital heart transplantation programs. Historical Chronicler: Dr. Merrill has written extensive historical retrospectives documenting Dr. Bender's legacy and the collective structural development of cardiothoracic residency training. Together, their synergy as surgeons, authors, and educators established modern protocols for handling highly volatile, fragile infant cardiovascular systems.…
