A propos de cet article

Workaday existence can easily become a survival contest, waged in the cheerless shadow of world events. The communications media keep us in touch with matters we might be disinclined to touch with a ten-foot pole; yet curiosity and conscience, mixed in varying proportions, decree that we must be aware of such things. So the latest news is on tap. One of the tricks of survival is to avoid swallowing it in massive doses. Granting all this, why should anyone go to see a suspense film, when suspense is a familiar condition of life? Why should anyone pay up to $5.00 just to be scared out of his wits? Perhaps it is because suspense films are ultimately "safe." The events in them are not real, though they may be startlingly reflective of reality. The silkstocking murderer, the elusive poisoner, the rapist terrorizing an entire city - though realistic, they are not real. Thus, a suspense film brings us all of the derails of a bizarre, terrifying experience, without the risks involved in the experience itself. And we are titillated by the unknown, the macabre, the suspenseful. Suspense in the Cinema is not a mere catalogue of suspense films. It is an in-depth study of the components of suspense and the motivations of the audience. The characteristics of isolation, irony, phobia, accident, and other elements of "thrillers" are examined by themselves and in relation to films as entities. Suspense in the Cinema will not make it less terrifying to see films such as Psycho or Warning Shot, but it will explain why you are terrified. All orders shipped protected in a box.…
