Item description from seller

First published by M Q Publications, London, 2006, 1st printing. Bright, clean & tight copy, unread, in AS NEW condition. "We at MQ Publications feel that we owe it to our dear, dear friend R. Crumb to help him establish a more positive public image with women. So many women find most of his work so repellent, they won't give him a chance, and this is a very sensitive issue with him. It pains us to see how deeply hurt and saddened he is, the poor darling, by the negative response of women to his work. And we know, we see, that he sincerely wishes that women would like his work more, even while he can understand why it offends their feminine sensibilities. But, as he explains it, he 'can't help it.' He has to draw it as he feels it, and he deserves some credit for the honesty of his self-expression, though it's often not very pretty, or sweet, to say the least! [] And so, we here at MQ Publications, to help our dear friend, this painfully sensitive, suffering genius whose work we so admire, decided to see if we could come up with a book that would win over the ladies. To this end, we went through all his work and selected out drawings that are--well, 'cuddly' might be pouring it on a bit too thick--that show some semblance of warmth, affection, tenderness, and we think the experiment is a success: with this collection of drawings of much loved children, women and pet cats, lovely landscapes, quiet rooms, and honored musicians, you will come away feeling a positive affirmation of life, and perhaps a more kindly feeling toward the artist himself. That is our hope here at MQ Publications, that you will come to 'wuv' R. Crumb as much as we do." [editors jacket flap copy] "I never get bored seeing more work from a master who is so obsessively in love with the act of drawing; every image, even an otherwise prosaic still life from a 'pizzeria in St. Hyppolyte du Fort,' captures the eye and imagination."--Steven Heller, The New York Times Book Review. "As Crumb admits in his introduction, sweet isn't what his work seems to be. Furthermore, he opines in so many words, sweetness is for gals. So, is this album of one-panel and one-page comics and many freestanding drawings somehow 'Crumb for the ladies'? Well, none of Crumb's trademark raunch is on view; the closest he comes is a reminiscence of his then-preschooler daughter's curiosity about 'poop.' But Crumb remains in love with carnality. What he draws has weight, and what he admires he draws even heavier. Surely the girl-jock high-school classmates he lovingly recalls didn't have legs quite that massive; they were teenagers, after all. Such drawing doesn't have much of the delicacy considered especially appealing to women. It does have particularity (does this guy know shading or what?), which gives each portrait of an old or (seldom) new entertainer, each view of a favorite forest pathway, each rendering of a fantastic bit of French medieval architecture, visual tangibility. And it has affection, which is sweet, no? But not just for ladies."--Ray Olson, Booklist. Pristine hardcover w/brilliant corners & crisp edges, a square & tight binding, wrapped in a sweet-as-new jacket that removes to reveal the same bright images on the boards. Quite presentable & collectible.
