A propos de cet article

Folio, 320x210mm. First edition. "Begun in Westminster-Hall the 22th of March 1640. And Continued before Judgment was Given until the 10th of May 1641. Shewing the Form of Parliamentary Proceedings In an Impeachment of Treason. To which is Added A short Account of some other Matters of Fact Transacted in Both Houses of Parliament, Precedent, Concomitant and Subsequent to the said Tryal: With some Special Arguments in Law Relating to a Bill of Attainder. Faithfully Collected, and Impartially Published, Without Observation or Reflection, by John Rushworth of Lincolnes-Inn, Esq; London, Printed for John Wright at the Crown on Ludgate-Hill, and Richard Chiswell at the Rose and Crown in St. Pauls Church-Yard, 1680." Frontispiece portrait. pp(10),1-76,101-252,401-786; complete despite gaps in pagination. Title-page with double-ruled border, text with single-ruled borders; headpiece and decorated initial capital to dedication, one-or-two decorated initial capitals elsewheres. Frontispiece and title-page a little toned, lightly handling-marked and faintly dust-marked. Frontispiece also with three quite closely-spaced tan streaks - the longest and widest of length 60mm and width 2mm, the shortest and narrowest of length 30mm and width 1mm - near-parallel to and up to 40mm from inner edge; only print beneath image affected, and not too adversely. Parts of fore- & upper margins of page 726 marked with a light ingrained sprinkling of fine black powder, nothing too disfiguring. Final leaf - pages 785/786 - with two curved closed tears from inner edge of lengths about 170mm and 60mm, both passing through 'Table' entries on page 785, but confined to blank areas of page 786 except where crossing ruled borders; no loss of print or legibility. Contents otherwise with occasional light toning, with here & there some minor spotting or isolated spots, with one or two smudges and light handling marks, and a few short corner creases outside of page borders. Marbled edges of text-block toned, upper edge quite deeply darkened. Original plain dark calf-covered boards, three outer corners and sections of edges recently re-covered with compatibly-coloured hide. Recent replacement spine and endpapers. Board surfaces rubbed, quite densely surface-cracked, a little pitted, and here & there considerably lighter in tone over small patches, spots and specks of surface loss. Loss of hide along nearly 40mm of upper edge of front board; board edges otherwise a little rubbed where no replacement hide. Upper outer corner of rear board (where no replacement hide) rubbed. Replacement spine of professional quality, a little lighter in tone than boards; with six raised bands, blindstamped decorations, gilt rules at head and foot, and gilt title on maroon morocco label with upper & lower gilt-ruled borders; chipped original title-label retained, in envelope loosely inserted. Binding holding firmly and of handsome shelf appearance. Contents generally clean, tight and fresh. VERY GOOD copy. (Thomas Wentworth 1st Earl of Strafford 1593-1641, English statesman, Lord Deputy of Ireland 1632-40, on recall a leading advisor to Charles I in his attempt to strengthen the royal position against Parliament, major figure in period leading up to the English Civil War, publicly executed on Tower Hill.).…
