A propos de cet article

First Edition. Wraps. Privately printed opuscula [No. 34] secretly issued to the members of ye Sette of Odd Volumes. One of only 71 copies printed. 12mo. pp 33, [i]. (Unofficially Issued) printed on upper cover. One illustration. Head and tail pieces. Original publisher's blue wraps lettered black, all edges uncut. Insignia of Yeoman in black ink on verso of half title. A parody of scholarly essays containing no actual text, only elaborate footnotes and ancillary matter. A prequel to 'Pale Fire!? Members were notable men with a wide range of interests and each gathering was addressed by a member on some, usually arcane, subject. Each member had a club name 'Chronicler' 'Salopian' 'Horologer' 'Exaggerator' and in this case 'Yeoman'. Sir Ernest Clarke (1856-1923) was a medical clerk for public health, historian of agriculture, Secretary of theÊRoyal Agricultural Society, antiquarian, folklorist, bibliographer, author, editor, and scholar of folk songs. At Cambridge he was also the Gilbey Lecturer in History and Economics of Agriculture from 1897 to 1901. An Odd Volumes rarity. Very good indeed. Very good.…
