A propos de cet article

TWO COPIES - a first impression of the true first edition, published in August 1983 - this is a rebound ex-library copy, but is clean without any damage + a second impression of the true first edition, published in October 1985. ***Both books in very good condition in the original dustwrappers. Interestingly, only the first impression has a yellow stained top edge of the page block. Also, the back panels of the dustwrappers are completely different - please see scans. For detailed descriptions of the books, please refer to the original listings which are still on ABE. ***Both books 190 pages. 202mm x 132mm. ***'Gladys Mitchell turns out excellent novels on the old pattern - and still adds her own touch of unassuming eccentricity --- Human nature is quizzically observed and the English countryside lovingly described'. - The Tablet (Review quote taken from the back panel of the dustwrapper of the first impression) ***'Gladys Maude Winifred Mitchell (21 April 1901 - 27 July 1983) was an English author best known for her creation of Mrs Bradley, the heroine of 66 detective novels. Feted during her life (called "the Great Gladys" by Philip Larkin), her work has been largely neglected in the decades since her death. Mitchell wrote at least one novel a year throughout her career. Her first novel (Speedy Death, 1929) introduced Beatrice Adela Lestrange Bradley, a polymathic psychoanalyst and author who was featured in a further 65 novels. Her strong views and those of her assistant, Laura Menzies, on social and philosophical issues reflected those of her author; they appear to have been something of a self-portrait of the young Mitchell, reflecting, for good or ill, the standards of the modern, post-war era of the 1920s. Mitchell was an early member of the Detection Club along with G. K. Chesterton, Agatha Christie and Dorothy L. Sayers and throughout the 1930s was considered to be one of the "Big Three" women detective writers. (Wiki) ***An interesting comparative pair of first editions of Gladys Mitchell's "Cold, LOne and Still" - an ex-library copy of the first impression from 1983, and a second impression from 1985 - although a later title, quite hard to find now, especially in the original dustwrapper - perhaps as many copies went to lending libraries, as in this case. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
