8vo, pp. 203, unclipped dust jacket with lightly toned spine, a tear at the lower corner on the front board, light soiling, brick red boards with a few marks, interior with owner's name to ffep, newspaper review of the book (by Patrick Kavanagh) pasted onto fep, photographic frontispiece of 'The Tailor', some uneven toning throughout, a few pages marked and two old, dog eared corners observed, the binding leans a bit but is quite sound. Foreword by Frank O'Connor. This was first published as a series of stories and sayings in The Bell in 1942, being those of a tailor, Timothy Buckley, who lived in the vicinity of Gougane Barra, west Cork. After being denounced by the Catholic Dean of Cork, it was banned by the Censorship Board on 28 September 1942 during the government of Éamon de Valera, possibly due to the uncensored references by the couple to animal reproduction. Three priests forced Buckley to go on his knees and burn the book in his fireplace. When the censorship laws were reviewed in the 1960s, The Tailor and Ansty was the first book to have the ban lifted. Chapman and Hall reissued the book in 1964. This is a rare first edition in its original dust jacket. N° de réf. du vendeur 001896

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. The Tailor and Ansty was banned soon after its first publication in 1942 and became the subject of much bitter controversy. It has become a modern Irish classic, promising to make immortal the Tailor and his irrepressible wife, Ansty. The Tailor never travelled further than Scotland, yet the breadth of the world could not contain the wealth of his humour and fantasy. All human life is here marriages, inquests, matchmaking, wakes and always the Tailor, his wife and their black cow. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. N° de réf. du vendeur GOR001120015
