A propos de cet article

First edition of Fitzgerald's fourth collection of short stories and his final book of fiction published during his lifetime. First state, with the textual errors remaining uncorrected. Publisher and Year: New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1935 Edition: First edition, first printing, with "A" on the copyright page. First state, with pp. 351-353 uncanceled and retaining the requisite textual errors (e.g., p. 351 line 29-30 reads "Oh catch it - oh catch it"). In a subset of copies, the publisher replaced these pages with those that bore the corrected text, constituting the second state of the book. First printing dust jacket, lacking the price stamp on the front flap (no priority known). One of 5,100 copies. (Bruccoli A 18-1.a) Condition and Description: Octavo, publisher's dark blue-green cloth, stamped in gilt to the spine, 401 pp. A sharp and radiant copy of the book, with clean cloth and bright gilt. Tips lightly pushed and bumped. Very faint remains of light pencil on the front free endpaper. Clean pages, with just one small stain affecting the bottom right corner of the rear blank and pastedown, as shown. Contents leaf unopened (the subsequent leaf bears only the title of the book). Dust jacket tanned, with some soiling and staining, scratches, rubbing, small losses to the extremities, fading to the spine (as usual), and a one inch split to the upper rear joint. "I didn't realize it, but the days came along one after another, and then two years were gone, and everything was gone, and I was gone." Taps at Reveille is F. Scott Fitzgerald's final book of fiction published in his lifetime. This collection of short stories was written as the Jazz Age receded into economic collapse and personal reckoning, and it stands as his confrontation with moral consequence, diminished glamour, and irreversible loss. Issued in 1935, after the commercial failure of Tender Is the Night and during Fitzgerald's long decline marked by alcoholism, debt, and Zelda Fitzgerald's institutionalization, the book abandons the buoyant lyricism of his earlier work in favor of flatter, colder prose shaped by retrospection and accountability rather than aspiration. Its central achievement, "Babylon Revisited," revisits Paris not as a playground of expatriate excess but as a moral ruin, with Charlie Wales's failed attempt to reclaim his daughter echoing Fitzgerald's own fear that time and money could not repair what character had damaged. Contemporary reception was muted and often ambivalent, with critics acknowledging Fitzgerald's technical skill while questioning the collection's vitality, and the book sold poorly enough that Scribner's initial printing remained unsold for years. Yet, its reputation has steadily risen, and it is now widely regarded as Fitzgerald's strongest short-story collection, valued not for cohesion but for the density of late, disciplined work that documents the end of an era from inside its wreckage. Today, Taps at Reveille is read as Fitzgerald's unsparing self-audit, a book in which the myths he helped invent are methodically dismantled, leaving behind one of the most lucid literary records of what follows when the party ends and the music stops. - Inventory ID: 862 - 771 - 499.…
