Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. Two-page frontispiece, front and rear. You can see the covers in the photos. They're exceptionally clean. The black and silver lettering on the spine is very bright. There is some crinkling/wrinkling at the spine ends. The edges and corners are in excellent shape, one little shallow dent to the rear top edge. The page edges are very clean. The middle page edge is deckled or rough-cut. They did a very good job. The binding is very solid from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. The inside covers and endpapers, front and rear, form the same illustration. Both are very clean and in excellent shape. The pages are exceptionally clean. I've scrolled through them a number of times without finding any conspicuous soiling. I'm also not finding any conspicuous creasing, no turned-down corners or placeholder creases. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. There is one oddity. Trying to find a way to describe it, a good number of the pages have at their blank margins off their middle edge a light colorless pattern going from top to bottom in the shape of maybe the teeth of a comb, very light, haven't the vaguest idea what would create this, not wavy, pretty much flat, not a big deal in my opinion. I'm going to think of it as a decoration. There is a section of 16 pages of photographs, some of them quite stunning. They are all in excellent condition. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. It has a small tear with a crease off its front top edge, some wear at the spine ends, and a small bit of a loss off the top edge of the rear cover. The front flap is in very solid shape. The rear flap has a small closed tear off its top edge. The jacket is NOT price-clipped, not clipped at all. It will be fitted with a protective cover after the photos are scanned. 'For 25 years John Chapman served as the drama critic for The New York Daily News. He was known to his colleagues, associates and friends as "Mr. Theater, " Old Frost Face" and "The Curmudgeon," terms that were used with considerable affection. At his retirement Walter Kerr, Sunday, drama critic of The New York Times, remarked: "We will miss his very straightforward prose and his salty personality.
