A propos de cet article

Description :

The first edition of this publication of the correspondences of Penelope Fitzgerald. From the library of Carmen Callil, a personal friend and publisher of A. S. Byatt, who supplies the preface to this work. The first edition, first impression, in the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper.A wonderful volume presenting the personal correspondences of Booker Prize-winning novelist, poet, essayist and biographer Penelope Fitzgerald, edited by Terence Dooley. From the library of Carmen Callil, an Australian publisher who founded Virago Press in 1973, to "publish books which celebrated women and women's lives, and which would, by so doing, spread the message of women's liberation to the whole population". Virago publish works by new and neglected female authors, such as A. S. Byatt, Daphne du Maurier, Sylvia Townsend Warner, Margaret Atwood, and Angela Carter, all with a distinctive green spine synonymous with Virago. This work features a preface on Fitzgerald's life from A. S. Byatt, a friend and colleague of Callil, who published a number of her works when working at Chatto.Callil has written the dates of Fitzgerald's life ('17.12.1916 to 28.4.2000') to the title page. With pencil underlining and notations by Callil throughout, most concentrated to Byatt's preface. She underlines Byatt's descriptions of Fitzgerald's 'wildly funny wit' and 'wicked sense of humour'. Later on in the work, she has underlined a sentence from a 1991 letter from Fitzgerald in which she complains 'I'm dreading Bath as they've put me in the Royal Crescent, but I expect I'll be in the attics'. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, fine. Dust wrapper in exceptional condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally bright, but with pencil underlining throughout, and one or two page corners folded. Near Fine. N° de réf. du vendeur 966F63

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. A fascinating collection of letters from the great English novelist and prolific correspondent Penelope Fitzgerald. Acclaimed for her exquisitely elegant novels including the Booker Prize-winning Offshore and superb biographies, Penelope Fitzgerald was one of the finest British authors of the last century. Published here for the first time are her collected letters. An unparalleled record of the life of this greatly admired writer, these letters reveal her most important family relationships and friendships, and paint a clear picture both of herself and of her correspondents. They show us how she managed her own career according to her own convictions and how determined she was to put her world view across. A fascinating portrait of Penelope Fitzgerald as a mother, as a friend and as a writer, these letters give the same pleasure they gave to those who first opened them. Penelope Fitzgerald was one of the most distinctive voices in British literature. The prize-winning author of nine novels, three biographies and one collection of short stories, she died in 2000. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. N° de réf. du vendeur GOR001783688
