A retrospective exhibition of the British Pop artist. *** "Originally associated with the British Pop Art movement in the early 1960s, Joe Tilson has achieved international acclaim over the last forty years for the individuality and originality of his paintings, constructions, painted reliefs, prints and multiples, whose sources are drawn from literature, philosophy, ethnography and alchemy. Born in London in 1928, Tilson worked as a carpenter and joiner. After National Service in the RAF, he studied at St. Martin's School of Art and the Royal College of Art. He won the Rome Prize in 1955, and since then has spent much of his time in Italy. He has taught at important art schools in London, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, New York and Hamburg, and is a popular exhibitor at the Royal Academy's annual Summer Exhibition.
