A propos de cet article

[BOOK HISTORY]. Eds. Odile Blanc, Florence Charpigny. Contributors: Francois Dupuigrenet Desroussilles, Alan Marshall, et al. "Tissu / Papier, Echanges d'impressions: Question de points de vue [French]." Lyon, FR: ENS Editions, 2005. First edition. French language. Numerous essays on book history and materials such as tissue, paper, fabrics, etc., with full-color images. 9 x 8 inches. 16 oz. 128 pp. Minor shelf-wear. Use. Near Fine. ISBN: 9782847880823. "Fabric and paper. Two ancestral materials derived from the same substances: mulberry leaf and bark, cotton, linen, hemp. In the West, texts and images have circulated indifferently on fabric and paper, from the first woodblock printing to the Indian prints that made the fortune of the printers of Jouy-en-Josas, and to the many inscriptions that have invaded contemporary fashion. The motif circulates from the printed image to the fabric, the letter sometimes becomes a motif, the page of the book in turn forms figures that evoke embroidery, the very structure of the text calls to mind that of weaving. Didn't the texts of the ancients, before designating the text itself, refer to the words of the speaker who, interweaving words and phrases, evoked the gesture of the weaver? Fabric and paper, text and textile thus form an eternal metaphorical couple. They also constitute an object of long and living history, complex and magnificent, to which the city of Lyon and its region still bear witness today, where the production of books and fabrics has played, over time, an essential role. This work intends to tell this story by multiplying points of view and disciplines, by creating bridges between museums, researchers, artists and industrialists, a reflection which beyond its regional anchoring, has the value of a manifesto.".…
