A propos de cet article

Publication: London, C. W. Daniel, Ltd., 1920 Formatting: 8vo, pp. 96. Condition Report: Very Good. The original stiff orange card wrappers remain remarkably bright and secure, retaining a clean, unrubbed blue printed label to the upper board, which strongly supports the grade. The fragile original printed dust jacket is present and unclipped (priced 3s. 6d. net on the rear panel); it exhibits typical age-toning to the spine and margins, alongside a few small closed tears and minor chipping to the spine ends and top edge, though it remains largely intact and highly presentable. Internally, the binding is tight and square. The pages are clean with only faint, occasional offsetting and toning to the extremities, typical of the paper stock used during this period, and remain entirely free of heavy foxing or major structural defects. Catalogue Note: First edition (Roberts A14a). This copy is notably scarce on the open market due to the retention of its fragile original printed dust jacket over the publisher's stiff wrappers. Issued as Number Two in the 'Plays for a People's Theatre' series, Lawrence wrote a special preface for the imprint, intending this to be the inaugural release before being superseded by Douglas Goldring's The Fight for Freedom. The text is unillustrated. The front free endpaper bears an intriguing contemporary ink inscription dated 27/5/'22 reading: "Everyman Theatre. In memory of 'Hedda Gabler'. To Peggy from Nick." The Everyman Theatre in Hampstead, which opened in 1920, was renowned for staging progressive and avant-garde plays, including the works of Ibsen, making this a highly fitting cultural association for Lawrence's industrial drama. Set in a volatile English Midlands colliery town, Touch and Go is a compelling drama exploring the friction between capital and labour following the First World War. Through the escalating conflict between the Barlow family, the beleaguered colliery owners, and the striking miners whose livelihoods are on the line, D. H. Lawrence captures the profound psychological and societal tensions of early 20th-century class warfare. With impassioned characters and sharply observed dialogue, Lawrence dramatises the human cost of industrial strife, bringing his characteristic emotional intensity to the stage.…
