cloth, dust jacket. Bookbinding (illustrateur). small 4to. cloth, dust jacket. 176 pages. First edition. This book is the first illustrated guide to this complex and controversial subject. In 1930, in The Evolution of Publishers' Binding Styles, Michael Sadleir declared that "the bookseller-publisher of the decades from 1730 to 1770 issued his books either in loose quires, or stitched, or a most in a plain paper wrapper." This view is still generally accepted. Bennett, however, presents new documentary and visual evidence that books were predominantly sold ready-bound in sheep, calf, and goat as well as boards and wrappers. Over 200 color illustrations show what these bindings looked like, and how their styles evolved. N° de réf. du vendeur 93908

Hardcover. Etat : New. Etat de la jaquette : New. 1st Edition. 176pp., 4to (12 x 9 inches). Color illustrations. New in the original cloth, dust-jacket, and glassine wrapper, although the glassine wrapper can be opened if a purchaser would like the book defaced with an - entirely optional - author's inscription. First edition, presenting documentary and visual evidence that books were predominantly sold during this period ready-bound in sheep, calf, and goat as well as in boards and wrappers. Over two hundred color illustrations show what these bindings looked like, and how their styles evolved. The London Times Literary Supplement called the book "a bold and welcome step forward" in the study of bookbinding history, and an American reviewer described it as "a tool for the discerning book connoisseur [which] fills a long-standing gap in the bookbinding literature that, in retrospect, is as self-evident as a missing front tooth." Prospective overseas purchasers should note that normal ABE postage rates will not apply and that the postage cost will certainly be greater than the price of the book.
