This is the landmark 1896 English edition of a foundational occult text by the influential French magician and author Éliphas Lévi (pseudonym of Alphonse Louis Constant, 1810–1875), a complete translation by British occultist Arthur Edward Waite (1857–1942) of Lévi's two-part French work Dogme et Rituel de la Haute Magie (originally published in 1854–1856). Waite's edition includes a detailed biographical preface on Lévi, extensive footnotes offering scholarly commentary (sometimes critical of Lévi's sources), and the famous original engravings, including the iconic "Baphomet" image. The book is divided into two main sections: The Doctrine of Transcendental Magic—This theoretical half explores the philosophical and symbolic foundations of magic. It covers topics such as the Kabbalah, Hermetic principles, the Tarot, equilibrium, the astral light, the power of imagination, and the relationship between magic, science, and religion. Lévi synthesizes ideas from ancient traditions, Christianity, and esotericism, presenting magic as a "transcendental" science uniting will, imagination, and universal forces. The Ritual of Transcendental Magic — The practical half provides instructions for ceremonial magic. It details the preparation of magical tools (wands, cups, swords, pentacles), consecrations, invocations, evocations, necromancy, spells, and divination. It emphasizes moral discipline, willpower, and symbolic correspondences while warning against misuse. Lévi's work was pivotal in the 19th-century occult revival. It helped popularize concepts like the modern understanding of the pentagram (one point up for good, two up for evil), the links between Tarot and Kabbalah, and a systematic approach to ritual magic. It profoundly influenced later figures and groups, including the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, Aleister Crowley (who claimed a past-life connection to Lévi), and the broader development of ceremonial magic, Wicca, and modern esotericism. Waite's translation made these ideas accessible to English-speaking audiences and remains one of the most widely read and reprinted editions. From Waite's autobiography: "[Levi] was clothed in paradox as with a garment, and yet had the gift of scattering illuminating maxims up and down his pages, so that there is scarcely a dull chapter in all his writings. Little more than a peasant's child, he had been trained at Saint Sulpice and had taken the vows imposed on the sub-diaconate; but having got into trouble with his Superiors over some point or points of doctrine, he ran away and was presently married, his lesser Orders and their commitments notwith-standing. Here was great disillusion; but all the occultists in London and all the French schools which were beginning to chatter in Paris regarded Lévi as a foremost Guide and Mentor. It seemed good therefore to let a little daylight in, and I conceived the design of an ordered digest of Lévi's writings, based on his Doctrine and Ritual but drawing at full length from his later volumes whatever might elucidate his theses, and critically introducing the whole." (Waite, Shadows of Life and Thought, 1938, p 96).…
