A propos de cet article

[iv], 1-156, 169-398 pp (397/398 in manuscript facs with info from 399 included at the bottom of 398, missing 400 which is an advert). Lacking 157-168. With 24 maps and plates, including fold map of the country, partially coloured folding plate of coins and large folding map at the rear of Rotterdam. 12 mo. With an unusual binding repaired long ago with old paper manuscript (in English) on the spine, brown marbled paper boards. Engraved title page. Extensive marginalia and commentary by the Reverend John Archambo Argles. (1761—1848), an Anglican clergyman whose bookplate is in the front. This is a damaged copy of a surprisingly very scarce book — the 1816 first edition of an English language guidebook to the United Netherlands. Worldcat lists only 8 holdings, two in the US, one in the UK, the remaining 5 in the Netherland libraries only. Only one auction record in the last 100 years. It is offered here principally due to the fascinating and voluminous handwritten commentary of a contemporary British visitor to the Netherlands: Rev. Argles, a Cambridge-educated clergyman from Kent who liberally augmented the book with his own rather idiosyncratic observations as he travelled throughout the country. It is thus an important and quite captivating personalized tour of the Netherlands, particularly interesting in that it was conducted during a very early period shaped by the Napoleonic Wars, which only recently had been made more accessible to non-commercial or military travellers. As such, it illustrates the very beginning of a new and renewed phase of European travel and tourism, here coupled with extensive handwritten commentary, offering a valuable insight into the attitudes of one British traveller of that era. The commentary may be compared with Seth Stevenson’s Journal of a tour through part of France, Flanders, and Holland, (1817) althoughi in this case, given the somewhat cranky commentator, not necessarily suitable for publication! Argles arrived in Rotterdam on May 28, 1822, and left in October of that same year. During that period he used this book to keep track of his expenses, make notes on what impressed him about what he was seeing, (and to make corrections to the publisher’s grammar!) His trip may have been part of a Grand Tour, since he also mentions previous sojourns in Franch and Switzerland, apparently in 1814, although, given the era, this would have been fairly early for a post-Napoleonic tour. Interestingly, Argles seems to have taken quite a dislike to the Dutch, at one point saying “One might almost imagine that the Brain is the other side upward, for all they do is inverted, or the reverse of other People.” Perhaps part of his dislike was because of the Dutch participation with Napoleon’s armies early in the wars, although they later joined with the British. And in fact, at one point he laments the French incursion into Amsterdam where he noted one neighbourhood: “.only a few Years since covered with Streets of Manufacturers’ Dwellings - all pulled down by the reforming French for the Lead of the Gutters — Oh France, France, what have you to say — for I may safely say that to this day the Code Napoleon is a fearful Scourge.”Although he put his notes where he willed (and oddly, didn't start his notes until part way through the volume), his favourite spot was the back of the maps where he often filled the page top to bottom, side to side. In Amsterdam he said of the Palace, “A very fine Building with some errors in point of Taste.” He also mentioned “charming weather giving all the way a most sublime view of a tremendous fire at Amsterdam, which turned out to be a sad destruction of one the largest Churches.” After a visit to the Academy of Sciences he commented, “Both magnificent - the Philo & Mechanic Divisions very superior - the most powerful Magnet & electrifying apparatus in the world.” He kept track of his expenses noting a “Delightful Week at Haarlem” where he.…
