A propos de cet article

BROWN, SAMUEL (1769-1805). A Treatise on the Nature, Origin and Progress of the Yellow Fever with Observations on its Treatment; Comprising an Account of the Disease in Several Capitals of the United States but More Particularly as it Prevailed in Boston. Boston: Manning & Loring, April 1800. FIRST EDITION, 8vo, 112 pp., attractively bound in black leather spine with red label, marbled boards, not listed in Garrison & Morton. Fine copy with light foxing throughout. Samuel Brown received the Boston Prize medal presented by the Humane Society of Boston for the best collection of facts on Yellow Fever and his treatise was subsequently published. This work was published 100 years prior to the discovery by Walter Reed that a virus transmitted by mosquitoes was the cause of Yellow Fever. A review of his work published the following year stated: “In tracing the causes of pestilential diseases, our author reviews many of the more prominent facts concerning the operation of marsh exhalations and human effluvia…As to the constitution of this pestilential principle, he sets forth, and is inclined to adopt, the opinion of Dr. Mitchill, that it is formed by the different modifications of septic (azotic) and oxygenous matters evolved and chemically combined in the putrefaction of animal and vegetable substances…we recommend the perusal of the pamphlet to all who are desirous to see a brief and compact exhibition of some of the more important facts and authorities concerning this subject.” (Source: Medical Repository of Original Essays and Intelligence, January 1, 1801).…
