A propos de cet article

4to. pp. xxiv, 182; 68. Frontis. black & white lithograph of a steam packet in a storm. Illustrated with black & white illustrations and diagrams. Appendix. Index. Previous owner's bookplate on front pastedown and signature to front free endpaper (those of noted maritime collector Frederick Ellis, along with the name of his yacht). Bound in original grey boards, spine rebacked with cloth. Rubbed edges and corners; dampstain affecting first four leaves. A legitimate assessment amid the advent of steam by the explorer who spent three voyages scouring the Arctic, retiring with as a Rear Admiral. The frontispiece is a fine treatment of chiaroscuro, depicting the "the James Watt Steam Packet Propelling Against a STORM;" that and the sextant plate with foxing. Since 1973 only three copies have appeared at auction.
