The book is in mostly good condition, however it has a large rip in the back cover. This book is the proceedings of the second annual military symposium that took place at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas from 14 to 16 September 2004. The US army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) sponsored the event and the US Army Combined Arms Center's Combat Studies Institute (SDI) served as its host. The symposium brought together civilian historian and military officers for the purpose of discussion a variety of historical case studies and the ways in which they can illuminate current military issue and operations. Among the topics covered are: Military Operations, Stability Operations, Leonard Wood, John J. Pershing, Moros, Mexican Revolution, Cold War, Vietnamization, Post-Conflict, Panama, Terrorism, Insurgency, Military Training, and Indigenous Forces. Lt. Col, Brian M. De Toy, Ph.D. was the director of the Defense and Strategic Studies (DSS) program at the United States Military Academy. De Toy led over 80 staff rides, another name for battlefield studies, on three continents, covering the battles of five wars, during his military career. He led over 40 staff rides at Gettysburg alone. De Toy spent 11 years teaching at West Point; first in the history department, then in the department of military instruction. Over his career, De Toy served in both light and mechanized infantry units in the United States and Germany. He was the chief of research and publications for the Combat Studies Institute at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas and professor of military science at the University of Kansas. He deployed to Operation Golden Pheasant in Honduras, the Sinai Multi-National Force and Observers, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. He received M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in history from Florida State University and has been published numerous times.
