First edition, first printing. Simon and Schuster, New York, 1941. Hardcover. Illustrated by Howard Frech.
Carson's first book - the one she considered her most personal - published in November 1941, weeks before Pearl Harbor. The timing was catastrophic for sales: a nation at war had no appetite for nature writing, and Simon and Schuster never reprinted. It was not until the success of The Sea Around Us (1951) that Oxford University Press reissued the title to a wider audience. Original first edition copies have remained scarce ever since.
Blue-gray linen cloth boards with gilt bird stamping to front board. Tan cloth spine with blue paper label, gilt lettering. Eight full-page teal illustrations by Howard Frech throughout. Copyright page confirms first printing. No later printings listed. Dedication: "To my mother."
Condition: Very Good. Binding tight, no cracks at hinges. Cloth shows light general wear consistent with age; small nick to rear board cloth, upper center. Gilt to front board present. Spine label intact, gilt lettering bright. Pages clean and bright throughout; faint, barely perceptible foxing to first and last blank leaves only. No dust jacket, as is typical for surviving copies of this edition. No ownership markings, stamps, or bookplates. N° de réf. du vendeur ABE-1772767579674
