One of Philip Hamerton's (1834 to 1894) scarcer works and arguably his best. Published in1871, 20 cm by 28 cm, 58 text pages (describing his adventures on his trip of exploration on the "unknown river"), 37 wonderful Hamerton engravings, decorative title page in red and black plus small vignette, plain coloured end papers and two-page list of some of Hamerton's other works. All page edges gilded - a masterpiece of the printers art. I am fortunate to have the original engravings produced by Hamerton for this volume. Hamerton is an interesting man - engraver, illustrator, traveller, champion of printmaking, artist, authority on etching, author and art critic. He edited was founding editor of the influential art periodical - "Portfolio Magazine". Excellent condition throughout. Size: 20 Cm By 28 Cm.
