A propos de cet article

First impression of the true first edition of this omnibus edition of the so-called "London trilogy", published by Macgibbon & Kee in 1969 - comprising "City of Spades" (1957), "Absolute Beginners" (1959) and "Mr Love and Justice" (1960). This copy has a couple of period newspaper clippings loosely inserted (please see scans). ***Near fine in duotone black & white cloth-covered boards with gilt titles on a beautiful dark-red panel on the spine. The boards are clean and unmarked. Head and tail of spine very slightly creased. Lower corner tips slightly creased. No reading lean or creases to the spine. Spine tight. Top edge of page block stained red by the publisher - just slightly faded. Page block edges clean. Internally also near fine, with previous owner's name 'Geoffrey Easeman' in ink on the front free endpaper. No other annotations. No internal foxing. Pages clean. The paper stock is very thin for this omnibus edition of 626 pages, but there are no creases or tears. ***In a very good dustwrapper, with the striking 1950s MOD cover illustration by Horace Ove. The dustwrapper has been corner price-clipped, but the original publisher's printed price of 75s net is still just present. although crossed through in ink. The dustwrapper is complete, but has some edge rubbing and creasing, with a few very small closed tears to the top edges. However, there are no significant chips or tears, which is unusual as dustwrappers from this period are prone to curling and tearing. Slight browning and creasing to the top edges of the inner flaps. No fading. Dustwrapper nice and clean. ***235mm x155mm. 626 pages. ***'Colin MacInnes (20 Aug 1914 - 22 Apr 1976) was an English novelist and journalist. He wrote his novels on black culture in England. "City of Spades" is a vivid novel about post war London's immigrant life, focusing on African arrivals and their interactions with the city's shifting social fabric. Told partly through the eyes of Johnny Fortune, a young Nigerian, and Montgomery Pew, a civil servant, it captures the excitement, misunderstandings and tensions of cross-cultural encounters. MacInnes portrays racism, poverty and resilience with honesty and energy, making the novel a groundbreaking exploration of multicultural Britain in the 1950s. ***"Absolute Beginners" is a classic coming-of-age novel set in 1950s London, following the journey of a young photographer and the "absolute beginners" generation. Adapted for film in 1986, featuring David Bowie's song inspired by the book. ***"Mr Love and Justice" follows sailor Frankie Love as he get in trouble with the law, and simultaneously the young Constable Justice, who has just stepped into the ranks of the law and finds the upholding of it complicated by love'. (Wiki) ***First impression of the true first edition of this omnibus of the "London Trilogy", published by Macgibbon & Kee in 1969, in the original dustwrapper. A very uncommon book to find now in any state, and particularly desirable in this near fine condition. A collector's copy. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
