A propos de cet article

2002. xlviii, 492pp. CD in pocket to rear. Blue faux leather hardcover binding . Book and unclipped dust jacket both in excellent condition with no inscriptions. "The extraordinary sequence of poems in this engaging collection of previously unpublished verse provides a memorable record of English life during the crucial middle decades of the seventeenth century. In particular, the experience of civil war in the 1640s, and the alienation suffered in the 1660s by those out of step with the prevailing regime, are depicted with all the compelling immediacy of personal involvement. Thomas St. Nicholas (1602–1668), an intelligent, sensitive, well-educated Puritan lawyer, confided his thoughts and feelings in poems as though in a private journal, but his fluent, conversational verse was written with posterity in mind. He hoped that, 'like optic glasses,' these poems would enable later generations to 'describe things afar off as if close by.' In this endeavor, the poet reveals himself as a strong personality and a devoted family man, as well as a public figure directly involved in affairs of state. Although dismissed as 'an old parliament dog' by his detractors, the poems show St. Nicholas as a thoughtful, reflective man striving to bias the heart the better way. The edition is richly annotated, placing the poems in their literary and historical setting and in the context of St. Nicholas's family life".…
