A propos de cet article

First editions, issued for subscribers only by Archibald Constable & Company Limited. Hardback two volumes in the original red cloth, lettered with gilt titles and decorations - St George & dragon on the spines and with three heraldic lions on the front cover. Volume 1 is dated 1901, Vol. 2 is dated 1906 and edited byH. Arthur Doubleday. Volume 1 covers natural history including geology, zoology, and early human history from early man through to the Anglo-Saxons. Vol. 2 covers the Domesday book translation for Norfolk, ecclesiastical history, and then has a complete coverage of religious houses in the county, followed by political history, medieval painting and early Christian art. Various authors credited throughout both volumes. Planned volumes 3-6 were never published due to failing eyesight and other causes of the editor William Rye. Volume One has 351pp, including 48 illustrations in plates and the text (engravings and b&w photos) including a tissue-guarded frontispiece and one coloured plate; and six maps (fold out, coloured). Volume two has 563pp. With 21 illustrations in plates and text, including colour plate frontispiece and two coloured plates of medieval wall paintings in Norwich cathedral; and two fold out maps. Very good set of volumes. Clean covers with some wear to corners and on the cover in both vols; gilt bright on both, though some marks on spine of volume one. Pages are well-bound in both. Vol. two has foxing to endpapers; closed fore-edges foxed in in volume two; occasional marginal spots, otherwise a generally very clean set of two volumes.…
